The MirageSummary:

  • The closing ceremony at The Mirage took place on Wednesday morning, as scheduled.
  • Bulldozers soon arrived at the scene, preparing for next week’s first demolition work.
  • The iconic property will turn into a guitar-shaped Hard Rock casino resort.

When you close a building, it’s something that’s so so sentimental”, said chairman of Hard Rock International and chief executive officer of Seminole Gaming, Jim Allen, during the official closing ceremony for The Mirage Hotel & Casino on Wednesday morning.

The 64-year-old gaming and hospitality industry veteran with over four decades of experience under his belt bid his farewell to the iconic venue that has been around for 34 years.

Allen took the opportunity to discuss a few of the plans and ideas for the upcoming Hard Rock casino resort on the property while sharing a few practical information on the way the demolition will unfold starting next week.

No Time Wasted

As soon as the ceremony that officially marked the closure of The Mirage ended, Hard Rock International gave the green light for bulldozers to go on-site and prepare for the major demolition of the US Casino which is scheduled for next week.

The demolition will prepare the long and complex redeveloping process that will turn the old property into a new Hard Rock casino resort.

Allen didn’t share how much of the property will be demolished and which parts will be remodeled when addressing the press before the closing ceremony.

However, he mentioned more details will follow soon. What is known so far is that the Atrium inside the Las Vegas Strip entrance will be demolished and the same will happen to the volcano.

The latter will be replaced by the 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel tower, a trademark of the Hard Rock brand.

On Thursday, construction staff and bulldozers will arrive on the property, following the slow mobilization in “the past five to six months“,

By this time next week, we will be in major demolition.

Estimated $4-$5 Billion Project Underway

The CEO explained that “certain things” will be saved, including the villas as “part of the amazing legacy of this building” which have hosted “iconic individuals — celebrities and politicians and influencers” over the years.

No other details on the new property’s footprint were disclosed during the ceremony, but Allen, who first saw The Mirage in the early ‘90s while working for Donald Trump, promised the project would be presented “the proper way in the future.”

He also said “a special little area where people will come to see the legacy of the property”, was part of the plans while explaining the decor and design would be changed.

Mentioning Sin City’s “ability to reinvent itself”, Allen acknowledged the future of gaming should be “cognizant of what’s happening with igaming, sports betting, and the utilization of the smartphone” for entertainment purposes.
